“Clearview City Directory Map (of) Brantford, Ont.” print by Vernon-Might (1931)

There are at least three Vernon-Might "Clearview" maps in my collection, and while I appreciate their map-making formula (square, one-colour, and handwritten), sometimes the local ads framing the map are the true stars.

I have no idea what advertising mastermind thought Ideal Garage at 133-135 Coborne West thought their slogan ("This Place is Hard to Beat") should be accompanied by an illustration of a woman spanking a child, but I'm completely in line with the ad at bottom right that asks "Why Bother?" when it comes to washing windows. Also of note: E.E. Huntington teaching violin at 71 Colborne, and that you can dial 459 or 443 to get in touch with the Reed & Brown Funeral Home at 93 Alfred Street.
